My approach to Collaborating and Working with Indigenous People

By: Nimkii Brad Howie

I recognize that I can’t speak for all Indigenous people, or all Anishinaabe people and, as such, I prioritize building authentic relationships with First Nation, Inuit, and Métis communities, Nations, organizations, and people. This collaborative approach allows me to continually align our educational programming with the desires and needs of the community.

I have known Brad in a research and teaching capacity for almost 4 years, we met through some incredible work he was doing at University of Guelph through the WISE Lab with Dr. Jesse Popp. It was immediately evident to me that Brad had the knowledge, humour, and relatability to be an effective teacher. Since then, I have worked with Brad as a speaker on topics of Pollinators, Native Plants, and Anishinaabek connections to land and all beings. With the capacity to continually add nuance to his materials through ongoing research and work, Brad is an amazing speaker and educator with the capacity to speak to all audience types on subjects of connection to the natural world.

Brad came to Crawford Lake to deliver an interactive teaching hike to my group of students. It's always a challenge to get teenagers to be enthusiastic - especially when it's cold outside! - but Brad had them engaged and getting excited almost right away. Along with an incredible understanding of how to explain and teach without talking down or oversimplifying, Brad has a wonderful, easygoing manner while teaching that invites conversation.

Our students were happily exploring and asking questions with Brad's encouragement. His depth of knowledge on everything from geology to Anishinaabe teachings to ecology and beyond is an inspiration and a pleasure to hear.

Thank you, Brad!

I reached out to Brad for support with the grade nine science curriculum, specifically, I was looking for someone to infuse Indigenous ways of knowing and teaching with sustainability and biodiversity. Brad was able to use his expertise and creativity to quickly craft a presentation for all grade nine students in our school.

Brad's presentation was more than educational, it was captivating. He shared his knowledge and passion, especially for fungi, through stories, personal experience, artifacts, humour, audience participation, and an animated slideshow. Brad made complex issues relatable and accessible for all.

It was evident that Brad loves what he teaches and genuinely cares about instilling knowledge in young minds. His dedication and enthusiasm for Indigenous science made a profound impression on both students and faculty. If you seek an educator who can make learning a joyous journey, Brad Howie is the perfect choice

I have a keen interest in braiding botanical knowledge from Western and Anishinaabe science perspectives for undergraduate education. My unlearning and relearning journey began with books and online resources of Anishinaabe teachings. This sparked my desire to speak with Brad Howie, who I knew had a genuine respect and enthusiasm for nature. Working with Brad was a pleasure!

He delivered a stimulating talk to my students, imparting a deep sense of wonder, curiosity and unity. Brad’s lived experiences and perspectives have added meaningful value to my curriculum. Importantly, he has inspired me to further embrace a two-eyed seeing approach in my development and delivery of educational content.
